Every year, the American Dental Association designates February as National Children’s Dental Health Month and puts forth a campaign for dentists and parents to help improve the oral health of their children. For 2018, the campaign is focused on getting kids to brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste and to clean between their teeth. If you have a child who is just now old enough to start brushing their teeth or you’re trying to get your kids back into good dental hygiene habits, start this month! We’ll cover a few of the reasons why this campaign is so important in this blog, and in the next one, we will go over a few ways to work with your kids to instill great dental habits!

Why Regular Brushing is So Important
We all know that we’re supposed to brush our teeth, but do we really know all of the reasons why? It’s pretty obvious that brushing helps scrub away a lot of the plaque and other gunk that builds up on our teeth, but do you know why it is so important to brush with a fluoride toothpaste? Fluoride is a compound found naturally across the planet that has been proven to help prevent tooth decay. While most cities and towns in the United States fluoridate their water supplies, this still might not be enough to effectively prevent cavities. By brushing with toothpaste that has fluoride in it, your children are adding an extra layer of protection to their teeth!
Why Your Kids Need to Clean Between Their Teeth
Let’s face it, nearly everyone can benefit from cleaning between their teeth more often. Teaching your children to floss and clean between their teeth as a normal and regular part of their oral hygiene routine will instill good habits that can last a lifetime and prevent them from having to go through expensive and painful dental treatments. Flossing and cleaning between teeth is important for several reasons: food and plaque that builds up between teeth can cause bad breath, and can eventually lead to tooth decay and cavities! Teaching your kids to clean between their teeth doesn’t have to be hard, and we will cover some tips and tricks in our next blog!
