Like so many things related to the health of you and your children, there seems to be conflicting information out there about what exactly is the proper way to brush your teeth. At La Petite Dentistry in Hudson, we believe in providing you with all of the tools you need to help make sure your kids have great dental health. Oral health can be easy to maintain as long as you brush, floss, and receive regular checkups and cleanings from a dentist. We will cover the proper way to brush your teeth and how to get your kids to brush correctly!
Pick the Right Brush
Make sure your kiddo has a toothbrush that fits comfortably in their hand and has bristles that are nice and soft. While you might think that stiffer bristles would help remove more plaque, they can actually cause irritation to your little one’s sensitive gums.
Don’t use too much toothpaste. Until your child has a lot of experience brushing their teeth and spitting out all of the toothpaste, you don’t want to give them too much because they will end up swallowing most or all of it. For kids under two, their toothpaste should only be the size of a grain of rice. Kids between two and five can use up to a pea-sized amount.
Proper Brushing Technique
To brush the front of the teeth, hold the brush at a 45-degree angle, and move gently side to side in a kind of rolling motion that gently works both the gums and the teeth. This is also how you should brush the inner surfaces of your child’s teeth. To clean the chewing surfaces and the tongue, scrub back and forth gently.
You will brush your kid’s teeth for a while until they get the hang of it, but it’s still a good idea to get the harder to reach areas for them after they’ve finished with the parts they can get to. Brush with your kids to show them that it is just a part of the daily routine that will continue once they get older. Make it fun by playing music while you brush!
